Abstract
Introduction:Internet addiction, now more commonly called problematic Internet use becomes one of the major problems in today's society. It is characterized by excessive and poorly controlled pre-occupations which often lead to impairment and distress. This study aimed to identify the prevalence of Internet addiction and its associated factors among medical students of University of Sciences and Technology.
Methods: This cross sectional analytic study was carried out among 285 medical students of University of sciences and Technology, during a period of 7 months .The data was collected by using structural questionnaire (Dr. Kimberley S. Young's IAT). The samples were collected by stratified random sampling and analyzed by (Statistical Package for Social Sciences). Results were presented by tables and figures according to variables types.
Result: 285 medical students from 1st to 6th academic levels were participating in our study. 143 (50.2%) were males while 142 (49.8%) were females. The mean age was 21.6 year ±2.0 standard deviation. 275 (96.5%) of participants were Internet users, of them, 224 (81.5%) of students were placed in the Internet addiction group. Generally, 68.7% of students had mild addiction, 12.4% had moderate addiction, and 0.4% of students had severe addiction. 113 (81.9%) were male and 111 (81.0%) were female. Students who had a real friends more than 5 friends , who accessed Internet by mobile, who stayed on-line daily and 4-6 hours per day and when the speed of Internet was faster were more significantly Internet addicted. (There is no significant association between other variables and Internet addiction.
Conclusion: Internet usage causing significant problem was very less among medical students but considerable proportion of medical students were Internet addicted that causes frequent problems.
